FRACTION LAB / LESSON 01

New pieces.
Same delicious half.

Equivalent fractions are different names for the same amount of an equal-sized whole.

Cut each half into smaller, equal pieces. The number of pieces changes, but the shaded amount stays exactly the same.

THE GOLDEN RULE

Multiply the top and bottom by the same non-zero number.

1/2 × k/k = k/(2k)

4 pieces
1 piece122 pieces
1/2 = 4/8Multiply both numbers by 4. Still exactly half!

At 244 pieces, the dividing lines are very close together. Every slice is equal, and exactly 122 are shaded.

✦

More pieces doesn’t mean more pizza. If you cut your half into 122 tiny slices, you still have half the pizza. The size of each slice gets smaller!
